The November 2024 CASC Mission Operational Meeting, also referred to as the CASC Futures Forum, will convene USGS CASC staff and consortium counterparts to discuss past, present, and future climate adaptation science, operations, and practices. The meeting will help inform and guide future National and Regional Climate Adaptation Science Center work. Participants will also work to identify opportunities for new research, collaborations, and operational efficiencies.

This session will be broken up into three 20 min sections with three speakers each who will present in a fast-paced and engaging storytelling format called Pecha Kucha or chit-chat in Japanese.
Co-production Lessons Learned - Highlight the valuable insights gained through our evolving approaches to co-production and translational science, showcasing how collaborative efforts have led to impactful, actionable climate solutions. Science Synthesis Efforts, Lessons, and Impacts -How regions are building/addressing the capacity to do science synthesis, what formats are being applied, and how this information is used in the region. The Role of Technical Services in Fostering Long-Term Research and Partnerships - Showcase a few regional climate / technical services (roles/position), with a focus on how those roles help bridge research with actionable strategies. Highlighting a key partnership or project(s) developed through these efforts.

Harvesting Insights for the Future - Engage in interactive activities and discussions to prioritize emerging areas of research and practice for climate adaptation knowledge generation that continues to build upon the existing work of the CASC Network and informs the Federal Advisory Committee, senior leaders, and researchers.
In 2021-2022, the Cross-CASC Climate Training Initiative group identified the need for additional capacity building efforts that utilized CASC science and were tailored to the local audience, context, and place. What can we learn from the capacity building approaches that have recently spun up from the different regional CASCs to help increase climate-informed decision-making moving forward?

The CASCs provide resource managers and other partners with the scientific information and decision-making tools they need to understand and adapt to climate change. What should we be doing more of or differently to improve partners’ access, use, and interpretation of existing climate adaptation science, data, and tools?

As practitioners implement strategies that are designed to build resilience and support adaptation of plants, animals, water, lands and people to climate change, there has been little research on whether those actions are achieving desired outcomes. What role should the CASCs play in building out this nascent field of science, and how might we get started?

Incorporating Indigenous Knowledges (IK) and practices into natural resource management has gained momentum at all levels of management, including federal, state, and local levels, and is increasingly promoted as a more holistic perspective. However, what remains uncertain is what IK means to these different agencies and groups because not only is IK a different world view, it is also a different value view.
